4 oktober 2021 om 15:39 uur viel er een digitale stilte over de wereld. Plotseling kregen miljarden mensen de melding: ‘Kan geen verbinding maken’. Dit was niet zomaar een kleine storing of technische hapering. Facebook, samen met zijn dochterondernemingen WhatsApp en Instagram, waren volledig van het internet verdwenen. Alsof iemand letterlijk de stekker uit hun gigantische datacentra had getrokken… De impact was enorm en de aandelen van Facebook daalden met 4,9%.

De wereld om ons heen verandert in een razendsnel tempo. Aangejaagd door technologische vooruitgang, toenemende onderlinge verbondenheid en een overvloed aan data worden problemen steeds complexer en de impact ervan kan catastrofaal zijn.

Maar wat maakt complexiteit complex? En hoe kunnen we ons voorbereiden om hiermee om te gaan?
